Over the years, we have worked on several programs to build an ecosystem to support the core vision of a greener earth. We feel privileged to have the confidence and accolades of national and global organizations on this journey. We remain focused on building awareness and green spaces everywhere.

Recognizing the need for active social engagement and future advocates for our cause, we focused on creating awareness among students. We ran multiple programs in schools and colleges in our district, sowing seeds through open discussions, auditorium talks, banners, slide shows, question and answer sessions, and immersive events. We conducted interschool competitions on different topics to engage the young minds on key issues impacting the environment.

Keenly aware of the need to include all sections of society including government departments and functionaries, we conducted large-scale events to raise awareness. On February 13, 1993, we organized the first ever district marathon in Visakhapatnam ‘GREEN RUN’ with over 12000 participants including students, district officials, citizens, corporates and the Navy. This run was addressed by Shri K. R. Narayanan, Hon. Vice President of India, who graced the occasion as the chief guest.

Events like cycling rallies with students from schools and colleges raised awareness and brought focus around pollution and limiting fuel consumption. Exhibitions on environmental hazards and potential solutions from the students helped raise city level consciousness, engagement and brought recognition for the work of students.

We have worked on large scale plantation programs. We started with a nursery in 1993 at Ranichandramani Devi Government Hospital premises with a total of 10,000 saplings and distributed for plantation in different residential areas, schools and colleges. As part of the Make Visakha Green campaign initiated by GVMC and the city forum Praakruthi, we played a lead role in distributing and planting 100,000 saplings around the city. We also started planting on hillocks in and around the city with participation from students and residents. The first project was adopted as part of the sustainable eco development project of WWF India.

Over the years, we formed the Green Vision Eco-Clubs. The project was supported by the HRD Ministry, Government of India in 1994. These clubs are now the backbone for execution of our large- scale projects everywhere. The Eco Clubs participate in Nature Camps and Youth Festivals as well which started in 1995 to build a sense of community and camaraderie among the green brigade. College students continue to visit schools and spread awareness now using technology tools and simple merchandise like book labels etc.

In our bid to find sustainable solutions we supplemented our efforts by starting our Vermicomposting project in 1996. This was done with the support of VUDA at their nursery. Vegetable waste was collected every day from large markets in the city and converted into compost. In 2000, the team was among the first to explore rainwater harvesting and ground water recharge, as part of the city’s depleting water levels and ensuing water crises. Raising awareness on this topic continues to be a crucial area of effort and relevance in the country. The team also supports initiatives of the District Rural Development Agency to create awareness and promote eco-friendly sustainable methods for agricultural farming.

The team has a renewed focus on the best solution to save our earth, one town and city at a time – plantation. Green Vision has undertaken large scale plantation projects in different areas of Visakhapatnam and Pune in phase one and will expand to Delhi, Gurgaon and Mumbai in phase two. We aim to plant 100,000 trees.

The team is increasing eco-clubs in colleges to build a backbone for the environmental programs. Students learn to raise and develop nurseries on their campuses. The idea is to build more green- thumbs and also engage the youth to participate in building awareness around sustainable living among school kids and communities. These clubs will also be participating in large scale plantation programs across cities.
